The investigation

1. Set up two identical systems
2. Change one variable — nutrient concentration, light hours or aeration
3. Measure root length, shoot height and leaf count weekly
4. Chart both systems on the same axes
5. Explain the difference using the data, not the impression
6. Compare a hydroponic plant against one grown in soil

You will also need

• A bright windowsill or a grow light
• Tap water
• About 10 minutes a week for measuring

Additional note: nutrient concentrate is a plant fertiliser. Keep it sealed and out of reach of young children and pets, and wash hands after handling. Plants grown in this kit are for observation and are not intended to be eaten.

Germination usually shows within a week. The measurable difference between the two systems appears in weeks three to six.
