Parents starting home science usually make the same two mistakes: buying a large curriculum before knowing what suits their child, and treating “doing an experiment” as the goal. Both are fixable in a fortnight. Here is a starting sequence that costs almost nothing.
Week 1: pick one place and observe it
A window box, a corner of the yard, a park bench, a puddle that keeps reappearing. It does not need to be impressive. It needs to be somewhere you can return to.
Visit it twice this week. Each time, record four things: the date, the weather, what you can see, and one question. That is the whole task. The question is the important part — it is where every investigation later comes from.
Week 2: turn one question into a test
Take the best question and ask: what could we change, and what would we measure?
“Does the puddle dry faster in the sun?” becomes three saucers of water — sun, shade, indoors — measured daily. “Is there more life under the log than on the path?” becomes two one-minute counts in each place, repeated three times.
This is the moment home science becomes real science, and it is free.
Week 3: introduce the recording habit
Use the same page layout every time:
- Question — what are we finding out?
- Prediction — what do we think, and why?
- What we did — enough detail that someone else could repeat it
- What happened — numbers where possible, honestly
- What we think now — and what we would do differently
Repeating one layout is far more useful than variety. After four or five investigations children start filling it in without being asked, which is the actual goal.
Week 4: run a project that takes time
Short experiments teach method. Long ones teach patience and pattern-spotting. Good four-to-six-week options:
- A sealed jar ecosystem, observed weekly
- Growing the same plant in two conditions
- A household water or waste audit, repeated at the end to compare
- Weather records kept daily
What you actually need to buy
Almost nothing at the start:
- A notebook or printed recording pages
- A measuring jug and a ruler
- Clear jars
- A timer — a phone is fine
Buy a structured curriculum after you know how your child works, not before. You will choose better and waste less.
Handling several ages at once
Run one investigation, differentiate the recording. The eight-year-old draws and labels. The twelve-year-old tabulates, charts and writes a conclusion. Same activity, same table, no second lesson to prepare — this is the single biggest time-saver in a multi-age household.
Three things worth being firm about
- Predict before you look. Being wrong out loud is the point.
- Record what happened. Not what was supposed to happen.
- Repeat before concluding. One reading is an anecdote.
What about requirements?
Homeschool science requirements vary by state, and anyone who tells you what yours are without asking where you live is guessing. Check your own state’s rules, then map what you are doing against them.
